Flies and worms

Vials and plates on racks, with flips that follow the temperature.

BioManager — Flies and worms

Drosophila keeps vials in racks inside incubators; C. elegans keeps plates in boxes. Tabs: the vials or plates, Schedule, Experiments, Genotypes, Incubators & racks, Frozen (worms) and Settings.

  1. Under Incubators & racks, add each incubator with its temperature, then racks or boxes inside it.
  2. New vial (or plate): genotype, purpose and position. Fly purposes: stock, experiment, cross, virgins, progeny, expansion, backup. Worm purposes: maintenance, experiment, cross, progeny, synchronized, RNAi, males, starved.
  3. Schedule shows what's overdue, today and coming up in the next 7, 14 or 30 days. Mark vials Flipped (worms: Chunked), Collect eggs into a new vial (worms: Pick progeny), and record scoring. Intervals follow the temperature: set them under Settings → Temperatures and timing, and a rack moved from 25 °C to 18 °C changes its schedule by itself.
  4. In Grid, the line above a rack says when it was last flipped and when the next is due (red when overdue), and Flipped today beside Edit records a flip of the whole rack in one click (the rack list under Incubators & racks has the same button). Hover over the line for the rule it follows, e.g. every 14 days at 25 °C.
  5. Worms: New frozen lot records a freeze; thaw one onto a new plate when you need it.

Discard retires a vial (it can be restored); Copy to a new vial starts the next generation. Settings also renames the words and purposes to your lab's.

The Experiments tab puts vials or plates under a drug, RNAi or a temperature shift and follows their survival; New experiment can start with a rack's vials. See Experiments.
