Privacy
Privacy. Your lab's records stay with your lab.
BioManager is software your lab runs itself. Nobody runs a service that holds your records, so there is very little to say: here is all of it.
Your lab's records
Everything your lab keeps in BioManager (animals, stocks, experiments, the notebook, people's accounts) is kept on the computer running the desktop app, or on your lab's own server. BioManager's makers never receive it, and there is no BioManager account or cloud.
What the app sends
- Anonymous counts, once a day. To help its makers see how many labs use it, an installation sends a few counts and coarse facts: its version, desktop or server, the operating system's family and the database's kind; how many members and how many changed something in the week, each as a range; which parts are switched on; and a random number made for that installation, so it counts once. Never a name, username, email, anything anyone wrote, a database's name, the server's address or the computer's name. It goes to PostHog, asked not to locate it or keep a profile. Admins see exactly what is sent on the Usage report and can switch it off there; a server can also be started with
BIOMANAGER_TELEMETRY=0. - Checking for updates. The app asks GitHub for the latest release, saying only which version it is.
- What your lab turns on. Signing in with Google, Microsoft or your institution; showing a Google Calendar; sending email through your lab's own mail server; downloading a library of plasmid features. Each sends only what it needs, to the service you chose, and only once your lab sets it up.
AI assistants and the plugin
BioManager has no AI inside it. If you connect an assistant (Claude, ChatGPT or another), it reads your lab's records from your BioManager, as you and with your permissions, and what it reads is handled by that assistant's company under your agreement with them. You can end the connection at any time under Settings → AI assistant & tokens.
The BioManager plugin for assistants collects nothing and sends nothing anywhere. It is instructions for the assistant, plus, in Claude Code, the address of your own BioManager.
